Sonik?Sports have experienced something of a meteoric rise since the brands inception in 2008, establishing itself as one of the UK's leading manufacturers of?carp?rods, amongst other products. The company prides itself on the creation of rods that continually exceed expectations and provide exception value for money.

The Vader X Abbreviated Carp Rods from Sonik epitomise the beliefs of the company, offering incredible performance, exceptional build quality and good looks at a lower price point than other high-end rods on the market.

The Vader X range consists of seven rods, varying in length, test curve and practise. All rods in the range have a slim, light weight carbon fibre structure, the blank itself performs progressively when casting and playing fish. Lined along the blank in a fold friendly ringing pattern are double leg SiC guides, SiC, or silicon carbide guides are much stronger than the more traditional stainless steel guides and minimise abrasion with your?line?on cast and retrieve.

The rods also feature an anti-frap tip, meaning you won't have the problem of line tangle during casts regardless of how far you're punching your leads out.

Continuing down the blank, a line friendly, custom contoured Sonik line clip is housed at the top of the handle, keeping line abrasion to a minimum during transit to a new swim.

A 17mm black DPS reel seat is fitted to all rods in the Vader X Abbreviated range, comfortably casing all big pit reels with minimum fuss.

A high-quality Japanese shrink wrap butt grip gives you ultimate control during casting and when playing a fish and compliments the rods matte black finish exceptionally.

Finally, the butt of the rod features a black anodised butt cap, laser etched with Sonik Sports iconic 'S' logo.

As for the individual characteristics of the rods within the Vader X range, the shortest of the rods is the 10ft 3.00lb test curve variant, perfect for stalking situations in tight-knit foliage, or when you just need to save space in the car or at home.

Moving up to the 12ft variants of which there are four options, all in varying test curves; 2.75lb, 3.00lb, 3.25lb and 3.50lb. The choice enables you to tailor your approach to your chosen venue, with the stronger, stiffer rods generally able to cast further.

If distance fishing is your bread and butter, you probably should look at the Vader X 13ft 3.50lb test curve variant, this rod will comfortable punch your lead to the horizon.

The final rod in the range is the Spod and Marker Hybrid 12ft 4.50lb test curve rod, a hardy rod capable of casting substantial weights over and over again and with the lightweight design of the Vader X Abbreviated rods, it won't take it out of your arms.

The Shimano Ultegra XTD SPOD is a big pit reel which is specially designed for spodding or marker float fishing for carp. Great to pair up with that three?rod?set up, this spod reel ensures all that you need for spod methods rather than an over-complicated reel.

Adjusted to be perfect for spodding, Shimano geared the XTD Spod with 5,2:1 ratio, meaning a better retrieval speed of 124 cm per winch. There are three line clips to perfect the?line?lay which is assisted with the Aerowrap II and Super Slow 5 Oscillation from Shimano's technology.

The Ultegra SPOD XTD also sports a shallow spool because less line capacity is needed for spodding. There is also no spare spool to cut on expense for the angler and the body material is made from XT-7 with a spool material of forged aluminium double E.I. This not only provides a waterproof drag system but means it is capable of withstanding the miserable coldness of UK fishing in the cooler months.

To make this a comfortable reel, Shimano has gives the single machined aluminium handle an egg type knob instead of T-type for more grip.
