Penn Mag multiplier sea fishing reels have a towering reputation as one of the premier all-round reels for estuary and rock fishing on the beach. Now it has been given a third-generation makeover and is ready to lead the field once again. There are so many niches and different environments available to fish from the shore; when faced with so much choice, why not rely on a reel that can provide versatile performance as the sea and your fishing hopes stretch out in front of you. A new graphite frame with aluminium-reinforced graphite side plates has been installed to improve stability during your cast. This houses a spool made from forged aluminium for maximum lightness and strength. Six stainless steel bearings give the Penn MAG3 Reel a smooth operation that is well-translated into the stainless steel main and pinion gearing and backed up by another instant anti-reverse bearing. Out of the box, this reel has a very smooth action and its longevity is assured by these corrosion-resistant components. A smart black and red finish is highlighted with a stylish Penn logo in gold. Looking good! Since 1985, Penn has used HT-100 drag material and this is included in the Pen MAG3. Carbon fibre is laminated onto fibreglass and stamped into hard-wearing drag discs. Under test conditions HT-100 drag discs have been shown to run the equivalent of 100 miles of line with little if any observable change to the discs, which have a 15lb maximum drag rating. It also exhibits reduced friction at high temperatures, which results in reduced probability of line breaks. An indexed magnetic brake system will give you exquisite control over your cast, whatever your terminal tackle may be. The Penn MAG3 Reel's retrieval ratio remains at the very useful 6.1:1 seen in previous Mag Reel versions, bringing in up to 29' of line for every turn of the handle. When you're fighting big fish over the big distances of open saltwater, this is welcome reel capability. Depending on how big you want to go, the Penn MAG3 Reel comes in two size variants. The 525 version has a capacity for 240 yards (2189m) of heavy-duty line and the 515 version will take 270 yards (247m). The sea angler armed with a Penn MAG3 Reel, and possibly a Penn sea fishing rod, will be capable of smooth and tangle-free casting and will feel confident when faced with a range of opportunities on estuary beaches.
