Quiver Tip and Feeder Rod Buyers Guide

Essentially Quiver tip rods are the same as feeder rods. Both rods are designed for bottom fishing with feeders and without the use of a float. There's also a variety of rod and tip options available which will be covered in this guide.

ROD LENGTH

The first thing to consider when buying a rod for feeder fishing will be its length. The rod's length can be chosen by the distance you will be generally casting at. If you're casting below 40 metres then a 9 or 10ft rod is perfect. However, if you want to be casting further distances then opting for a longer rod will increase your casting range. Typically the longest feeder rods are 13ft and are able to cast past 80 metres.

QUIVER TIPS

When choosing a quiver tip it's important to look out for a few things to maximise its benefits and make sure it doesn't break. One of the more important features to look for is a quiver tips casting weight. If you're using a heavy feeder or ledger then you'll want to use a stronger tip to make sure it will cast properly and won't break during the cast.

The same applies for the size of the species you're targeting, larger fish like Carp and Barbel will require a stronger tip. Also if you're fishing on a water with a strong flow then you might want to use a stronger rod tip so you'll be able to indicate the bites. Stronger quiver tips will typically have larger eyes to allow the line to flow through them easier for longer casts.

Quiver tips can be crafted from one of two materials, fiberglass or carbon fiber. Generally the carbon fiber tips are a lot stronger, usually between 2 and 6oz. Whereas, fiberglass tips are a lot softer and have a test curve between half an ounce to two and a half ounces. In simple terms, the test curve is the amount of weight required to bend the quiver tip to 90 degrees from a horizontal position.

TIP RATINGS AND WHEN TO USE

There are four main groups for quiver tip ratings and each one can be used for different situations. The softest tip is rated between 0.5oz - 1oz and is primarily used for catching silverfish on stillwaters. The next group is 1.5oz - 2oz and can be used to target small Bream, Carp, Tench and silverfish on stillwaters or slow moving rivers. 2.5oz - 3oz quiver tips can be used for medium sized Chub, Carp and Tench on either stillwaters or moderately flowing rivers. Then any quiver tip rated above 4oz can be used for catching double figure Barbel or Carp on faster flowing rivers or when fishing at further distances.
