Beginners Guide to Boat Fishing

Sea fishing is such a popular sport and by using a boat we can reach species which we  couldn’t from the shoreline. It's also important to note that there are many sea fishing trips available out there which don't require you to have any gear, even the bait is supplied.

This guide will cover the different types of gear you may need while targeting specific fish from boats. We also have a Beginners Guide to Beach Fishing if you would like to enjoy saltwater fishing from the shoreline.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF DEEP SEA FISHING?

The first thing you'll want to consider will be the method you will use and the type of species you want to target. The main types of fishing are jigging, popping, trolling and chumming.

Jigging and popping with spinning reels can also be used while out at sea to catch a variety of fish although you will want to make sure you have strong enough gear and tackle to catch the species you're targeting. Lures can also be used at a variety of different depths with different retrievals to get bits. We also have a Buyers Guide to Spinning Rods which contains everything you need to know to buy your first rod.

Trolling is when a lure is dragged through the water from a moving boat. Typically trolling is used to catch large species such as Tuna and Marlin so you'll want strong gear. The speed of the boat is going to  depend on the type of species you're aiming for but typically between 5 and 8 knots is good for trolling. If you want to fish at lower depths then the boat's speed will have to also be lower.

A popular multiplier reel used for trolling is the Abu Garcia Ambassadeur seven reel. It's a high performance reel and great for pulling out large fish with an easy wind power handle. It also has a line capacity of 270 yards making it versatile and having enough line capacity to let the fish run a bit during a fight.

Chumming is a way to draw fish towards the boat by releasing chunks of baitfish. This method is used to attract Sharks, Tuna and other large species of fish. This can be done alongside trolling to create an extra scent.

BOTTOM FISHING

Another way of catching different species of fish such as halibut, snapper and grouper is by fishing on the bottom which can be found by using a fish finder. While fishing on the sea floor the boat should be stationary so you'll want to use something that attracts the fish such as a squid live bait. Depending on how deep the bottom is it can be hard to fight the fish to the surface and a great way to make it slightly easier is by using an electric reel. It's also important to make sure you have a rod and tackle that can handle the weight of species you're targeting.

BEST TIMES TO FISH?

Typically the best hours to fish are early dusk and dawn as fish can be more active. If you're spinning from a boat against the shoreline then it's best to look for features such as overhanging trees where the fish tend to lurk. If you're sea fishing it's also important to note when and where the tides and currents are as it can affect how the fish feed.

CHOOSING A ROD

An important part of boat fishing is going to be choosing the right rod. The length of rod can depend on the water you're fishing and the size of the boat. If you're lure fishing from a small boat down a river then you may want to opt for a shorter length as you wont need to cast as far. However, if your boat has the space and you need the power for larger species then choosing a longer length will be more beneficial. If you're using a freshwater rod for saltwater fishing then it's important to clean the rod often as the salt will erode the rod faster than a rod designed for saltwater.
