A Bite Out Of Cancer

A Bite Out Of Cancer is a charity we have been supporting for some time. Founded by Mike Smith, whose father sadly passed away from cancer. The section below has been taken from their website explaining what they do and why they do it. We highly recommend visiting their website here.

I would like to start this blog by telling you all a little bit about A Bite Out of Cancer (#abiteoutofcancer).

We raise money for Cancer Research UK by catching fish - which seems to be mainly Carp at present, but I can not stress this enough... this is not just for Carp Fishing; what we do is for all species of fish.

So, I’m going to tell you about my passion for Angling and how and why I started to do this for Cancer Research UK.

Let's go way back to when I was a young boy. I didn’t have much love for sitting still or even concentrating at school for that matter but when I got my first fishing rod from Woolworth’s (a gift from my Auntie), along with a black and red Daiwa seat box from another Auntie, I had no idea that these two items were going to change me and my life for the better. I won’t go into detail about my Carp fishing as you guys can see for yourselves what we do on our social media channels, but I am going to tell you about my sea fishing side of life.

Back in the Winter of 2015, we unfortunately lost my Dad on 30th of December to an awful brain tumour, so every time I go fishing it’s in memory of him and I promise I will make a difference and help prevent this happening again and again to the people that we love.

We spend a lot of the time thinking about what we can do for ourselves but not about what we can do for each other. So, back in 2017, myself (Mike Smith) and my best mate (and soon to be sea fishing legend – Paul Garbutt) ventured to the high cliffs around the North East and we decided to donate the weight of every fish we caught to Cancer Research UK. So that is what we did and what an AWESOME night it was. Sitting here writing this, it’s certainly a bit emotional thinking about where we started from to where we are now. Thinking about it… that night was like I finally managed to grieve for my Dad and say farewell but I will always honour and pay tribute to my Dad every time a fishing rod sits in my hand.
