Lead Weight Carp Fishing Guide

There is a huge variety of shapes and sized lead weights in the Carp fishing industry it can be hard to choose the right one.

There are two different types of leads, a swivel lead which can be attached to a lead clip, or an inline lead where the mainline runs through it. Leads also come in a range of colours and textures so you're able to match the style of the area you are fishing. Below is a more in depth look at what each type of lead can be used for.

INLINE FLAT PEAR LEAD

The inline lead has no swivel attachment and the mainline will run through the center of the lead. This type of lead is the only one that should be used alongside solid PVA bags due to the compact and neat design.

SWIVEL FLAT PEAR LEAD

The Flat pear design makes it an all rounder lead and great in most fishing situations. Due to the compact and even weight distribution it makes for a great hook hold. Also due to the flat design it's a great lead for sloped lake beds as it wont roll or slide like some other leads.

DISTANCE LEAD

The streamline design of these leads allow for further casting distances. Mainly used for fishing at long distances accurately.

SQUARE PEAR LEAD

Similar to the flat pear lead design they have an even weight distribution but smaller and easy to cast. Heavy weight for the size of the lead. Great for bolt rigs due to the design of lead.

THE PEAR LEAD

The Pear Lead is an all rounder lead and good in most fishing situations. They will cast good distances and also have a good weight distribution. However, when fishing over soft silt or lots of weed the pear weight shouldnt be used as they can bury themselves and your rig.

GRIPPER LEAD

The Gripper lead is an uncommon lead and usually only used when fishing on slopes, gravel bars or rivers.

MARKER LEAD

These types of leads come in different shapes but they all usually have bumps on the weight that stick outwards. The bumps on the lead create more sensitivity to the rod and are only used for feeling out the lake bed and finding features.

BACKLEAD

A regular Backlead can be attached to your mainline after a cast. It is used to pin down the line to the lakebed and stop fish bumping into the line.
