A Guide To Fishing with Artificial Baits

Artificial Baits have been around for years but have become more popular within modern day fishing due to the new styles and vibrant colours. Although lures are technically an artificial bait, this guide will not include them. If you're interested in lure fishing, we have a guide on both hard and soft lures.

Also known as fake baits, they are used in all types of fishing and for many different types of species. Ranging from fake worms, foods and other insects. Fake baits now can have a different buoyancy, there are some on the market which have a low buoyancy and are great to fish on their own or to top off a ground bait. And there are now fake baits with enough buoyancy they can be used as a pop up on a multi or chod rig.

WHY WOULD I USE FAKE BAITS?

Fake baits are great for many situations especially when fishing with a hair rig. For example if you're fishing with corn then it can sometimes fall off either during a cast or small fish in the area can nibble at it. By using a plastic or rubber piece of corn it is far less likely to come off the hair.

Some fake baits now can come pre flavoured. Typically the flavouring will be put into the plastic before they are placed into molds. However, it's also fine to soak plastic baits in your own flavouring as the plastic will absorb the flavour without changing its buoyancy.

POPULAR TYPES OF ARTIFICIAL BAITS

POP UP CORN

The pop up corn is one of the more popular used fake baits out there. It can come in all different colours and flavours. This pop up corn is the I.B yellow which is one of the more popular choices in its range due to the natural colour resemblance of corn. Some other colours that are featured in this range are white, lime green and pink. This type of bait can be fished on rigs such as the multi or chod and is usually best used with a smaller hook like a size 8 which will not affect the buoyancy.

IMITATION CASTERS

Fake casters are also a popular choice when it comes to artificial baits. They are great when targeting tench and barbel. Usually when using casters as a hookbait smaller fish can nibble or knock them off and you might not realise. There's nothing worse than reeling in and finding the bait has fallen off the hook. The plastic casters can be attached to a hair rig with a baiting needle and will allow you to fish with more confidence that it will stay on.

FAKE MAGGOTS

Similar to the imitation casters, smaller fish will not be able to take nibbles from the maggot and it will stay on the hook better when casting. Fake maggots are a popular choice and can be used for most species of fish. A common way to fish using them would be to attach either one or two real maggots with a fake one to a hair alongside a feeder with real maggots.
