How I Got Started

2020 was not only when I got into fishing but also when the Coronavirus started. I was at a friend’s house where he showed me his rod, taught me how to cast, and showed me some boiles, and from then I have been 'hooked'. That was in January 2020. All throughout lockdown my friend and I were constantly in touch on the phone, discussing when and where we could next go fishing. It was May 2020 when we were finally allowed to meet up, and the location we chose was my uncle's pond. Isaac caught some carp and I caught my first fish and from then on I have not looked back.

My favourite  catch and my Personal Best carp is my 10lb mirror carp, caught from a place called Hobbergate, a lake owned by Stone Private Angling Club. It was my friend Issac who got me into fishing and he was perch fishing on another peg near. I was watching our rods sitting down wondering if we were going to get a carp and all of a sudden I heard my bite alarm go crazy and I pick up my rod up and I that felt that excitement of a big fish on......I shouted to my friend to come over to help me net the fish. When I saw the carp rise to the surface and was pleased to see it was a mirror as I had always said for my first carp I wanted a mirror carp!

I never used to tell anyone at my school about my hobby but recently found out that some of my friends at school were also into carp fishing so it was nice to share fishing stories with them.

I live really close to a canal but that was where people in my school year hang out so that kind of put me off going fishing there because I used to think that it was an old man's sport and it was embarrassing. I had a talk with my dad and he said when he was at school there was kids his age going fishing and they were the cool boys and girls so now I go fishing and see people in my year and they don't make fun of me.

My family and friends are very supportive of my fishing hobby probably because it's my favourite thing to do in the world! When my Uncle who lives in Wales found out I had started fishing he sent me a load of fishing tackle. I  remember once he sent me a text ending with Tight Lines and I didn't know what it meant so I had to ask my Dad (who has only been fishing once in his life but never took to it) and between us we worked out that it was a saying meaning good luck. My parents are very supportive - if I am bored they will say "why dont you go fishing down the canal for a bit" because they know it is my passion. Thank you for reading my fishing story and hope it inspires other anglers. Tight lines!
